Our History

The Wimborne Wine Society began life in 1967 as the Wimborne Wine Circle, when 13 local wine enthusiasts came together to share their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for home wine-making. What started as a small gathering of like minded people soon developed into a thriving local society, bringing people together through a shared interest in wine.

Over the years, tastes and fashions inevitably changed. As home wine making gradually became less popular, many traditional Wine Circles saw their membership decline and eventually closed. Wimborne, however, successfully moved with the times.

In 2003, the organisation was renamed The Wimborne Wine Society, with a new emphasis on discovering, tasting and learning about commercially produced wines from around the world. The aim remained much the same as it had been in 1967: to bring together people with a shared interest in wine, to learn from one another and, above all, to enjoy wine in a friendly, relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Today, the Society continues to flourish and has become one of Dorset's most successful and well-established wine societies. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month, with each evening offering the opportunity to taste a carefully selected range of wines, discover different grape varieties and regions, and learn a little more about the fascinating world of wine.

Our tastings are as much about friendship and enjoyment as they are about wine. Over the years, the Society has welcomed knowledgeable speakers, wine merchants, producers and enthusiasts, while also organising visits and special events for members.

As we approach our 60th anniversary in 2027, we are proud that the spirit of those original 13 members remains very much at the heart of the Society. Sixty years on, we continue to bring people together to discover new wines, broaden their knowledge, share opinions and enjoy good company.
